What is keratoconus?

A colorful and creative fish-shaped craft made from various materials, featuring a large black button with an orange center as an eye, and decorated with bright orange, pink, and white colors.

Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition where the normally round cornea (the clear front part of the eye) thins and bulges outward into a cone shape.

This irregular shape prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, causing distorted and blurred vision that glasses alone often cannot correct.

Keratoconus can start in the teenage years and often progresses into adulthood. As the cornea becomes more irregular, vision continues to worsen.

While the exact cause of keratoconus is not fully understood, risk factors include:

  • Family history of keratoconus

  • Eye rubbing and chronic allergies

  • Certain systemic conditions (like connective tissue disorders)

If left untreated, keratoconus can lead to:

✔️ Severe distortion of vision

✔️ Increased sensitivity to light and glare

✔️ Frequent prescription changes

✔️ Potential need for corneal transplant in advanced cases

Signs You May Have Keratoconus:

✔️ Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions

✔️ Halos and glare around lights, especially at night

✔️ Sensitivity to bright light

✔️ Difficulty driving at night

Scleral lenses for keratoconus

At BRIGHT Eyes, we fit custom scleral contact lenses — the gold standard for vision correction in keratoconus.

Unlike standard contacts, scleral lenses:

✔️ Vault over the irregular cornea, creating a smooth optical surface

✔️ Provide sharp, stable vision even with advanced keratoconus

✔️ Rest comfortably on the white part of the eye (sclera) for all-day wear

✔️ Reduce irritation by keeping the cornea bathed in moisture

Scleral lenses not only restore vision but also protect the cornea, offering comfort and stability where glasses and soft contacts fall short.

Keratoconus is a chronic condition, but with proper treatment and monitoring, most patients can achieve excellent vision and avoid invasive surgeries.

The Specialty Vision + Contact Lens Center at BRIGHT Eyes provides:

✔️ Precision imaging and mapping of the cornea

✔️ Advanced lens design and customization

✔️ Contact lens application & removal training

✔️ Ongoing follow-up care to ensure comfort and effectiveness

✔️ At-home contact lens care supplies with direct-to-home shipping
