What is myopia?
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is one of the most common vision conditions in children and teens.
It occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This makes distant objects appear blurry, while close-up vision often remains clear.
Myopia (nearsightedness) is a growing concern in children, with more cases appearing every year—driven by increased screen time, indoor lifestyles, and early onset vision changes. Without intervention, the eye continues to elongate, increasing the risk of vision-threatening conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and early cataracts later in life.
That’s why our focus is prevention, not just correction—offering proactive treatments during the critical years when your child’s eyes are still developing.
Contributing Factors:
✔️ Increased screen time and close-up work (tablets, phones, computers)
✔️ Less outdoor play and natural light exposure
✔️ Family history of myopia
✔️ Early onset of vision changes in childhood
Signs Your Child May Have Myopia:
✔️ Squinting to see the board at school
✔️ Sitting very close to the TV or holding devices close to the face
✔️ Complaints of headaches or tired eyes
✔️ Difficulty seeing distant objects, especially at night
What is myopia control?
Myopia control is more than just correcting blurry distance vision—it’s about actively slowing the progression of nearsightedness to protect long-term eye health. When we understand how a child’s eyes are developing compared to their peers, we can recommend specific treatments and lifestyle guidance that help reduce the likelihood of developing high myopia, delay its onset, or slow it down significantly once it starts.
At BRIGHT Eyes in Boone, North Carolina, we don’t just correct vision—we actively work to slow the progression of myopia. Through our Bright Sight™ Myopia Management Program, we use evidence-based treatments to manage eye growth during the critical childhood years.
